Generator Diagnostics and Fault Finding

Finding the actual cause, not just the symptom.

Why people call us

Somebody has already replaced a battery and a couple of sensors, and it is still doing it.

Something is wrong with the generator. It will not start, or it starts and shuts down, or a warning light comes on and nobody can say why.

That is the point at which people call us. Diagnostics is the work of finding out what is genuinely wrong, rather than swapping parts until the symptom happens to disappear.

What we get called out for

Ten faults we see over and over

How we work through it

Four stages, in this order

01

We listen first

When did it start? What changed? What has already been tried? Half the diagnosis is usually in that conversation.

02

Controller and fault history

Modern generator controllers store a lot. We read the fault log and the event history, which often shows a pattern that a single live fault code does not.

03

Systematic testing

Fuel system, air, electrical, starting, charging, cooling, control and transfer. We test each in turn rather than guessing. Where it helps, we bring in load testing, thermal imaging or fluid analysis to confirm what we are seeing.

04

We tell you what we found

A clear explanation of the cause, what it will take to fix it, and what it costs. If there is more than one option, you get more than one option. If we find something else while we are in there, you hear about it before we touch it.

Why an all-makes specialist matters here

Every manufacturer has its own controller, its own fault codes and its own weak points.

Diagnostics is where brand experience really counts. Our technicians work across Cat, Cummins, Kohler, Generac, MTU and Detroit Diesel, so we recognise the faults that are typical for your machine instead of starting from scratch.

That is the difference between a first visit that ends with an answer and a first visit that ends with a parts order and a guess.

Common questions

Straight answers

How fast can you get to us?

Call us with the site, the make and what the machine is doing, and we will tell you honestly when we can be there rather than promising something we cannot hold to.

Do we have to be a maintenance customer?

No. We take diagnostic call-outs from anyone, including buildings that have never used us before.

What if you cannot find the fault?

Intermittent faults are genuinely hard, and anyone who says otherwise is guessing. If we cannot reproduce it on the first visit, we will tell you honestly and set up monitoring or a load test to force it to show itself.

Will you fix it the same day?

Often, if the parts are common. If a part has to be ordered we will tell you what it is, how long it will take, and whether there is a temporary arrangement worth making in the meantime.
