Generator Load Bank Testing

Proving your generator can carry the building — not just start.

Why it matters

Starting is easy. Carrying a full load for hours is the hard part.

Plenty of generators start beautifully during a monthly exercise and then fail twenty minutes into a real outage. A no-load exercise run tells you almost nothing about whether your machine can do the job it was bought for.

Load bank testing is how you find out for certain.

What load bank testing actually is

We make the machine work as hard as a genuine emergency would.

A load bank is a piece of equipment that creates an artificial electrical load. We connect it to your generator’s output and make the machine work as hard as it would in a real power failure.

We apply the load in stages, usually 25%, 50%, 75% and then full load, and monitor the generator at every step. That means voltage, current and frequency stability, engine temperature, oil pressure, fuel pressure, exhaust condition and cooling system performance.

At the end you get a report showing exactly how your generator behaved under load, and a clear list of anything that needs attention.

Why it matters

It is the only real test

Everything else is an educated guess. Load testing is the one procedure that answers the question you actually care about: will this machine carry my building?

It clears wet stacking

Standby diesels that only ever run briefly and lightly loaded never get hot enough to burn their fuel completely. Unburned fuel and carbon build up in the exhaust and cylinders. A proper load test brings the engine up to full operating temperature and burns it off.

It is usually required

Emergency power systems in Ontario buildings are covered by CSA requirements, and load testing is a normal part of meeting them. Insurers and building inspectors ask for the records.

It finds faults that only appear under load

A cooling system that is marginal, a fuel line that cannot keep up, a voltage regulator that drifts — none of these show themselves at no load. All of them show up under a load bank.

Will my building lose power during the test?

No. The load bank supplies its own artificial load, so your building keeps running on utility power throughout.

How long does it take?

Most annual tests run a few hours including setup. We will confirm the timing when we quote, so you can plan around it.

What if the generator fails the test?

Then you have found out on a scheduled Tuesday instead of during an outage. We will tell you what failed and what it takes to fix it.

Do you test generators you do not maintain?

Yes. Load testing is available as a standalone service.
